FAO Releases Report Together With UN Agencies, EU, and USAID
There are 282 million people facing acute hunger worldwide, with Sudan facing a particularly severe crisis. Dominique Burgeon, Director of the FAO Office in Geneva, said that there is urgent need to address food insecurity in the conflict-affected areas of Sudan, particularly in the Al Jazirah state, where 9 out of 10 people facing emergency food insecurity are in conflict hotspots.
He also stressed the importance of providing agricultural inputs to the population in time for the planting season, which is expected to start in June, five weeks from now, to prevent additional food insecurity and population displacement.
The report focuses on acute food insecurity due to shocks, affecting 282 million people in 59 countries. There has been a significant increase in the number of people facing acute hunger, with 176 million more people affected since 2016.
