Last Week Saw the Lowest Number of Reported Weekly Cases Since October
Today the World Health Organisation gave emergency use listing status to two versions of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. These vaccines will be rolled out globally through the COVAX Facility, the global risk-sharing mechanism for pooled procurement and equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, coordinated by GAVI, the Global Alliance on Vaccines and Immunization, with public and private sector partners.
One of the vaccines is produced by SKBio in the Republic of Korea and the other is produced by the Serum Institute of India. The vaccines needed separate approval as they are produced in different manufacturing plants.
The WHO has expedited the approval process that is needed to certify the quality, safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines, which is a prerequisite for vaccines to be distributed by COVAX. “In addition to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, these are now the second and third vaccines to receive emergency use listing”, said WHO Director-General.
