Global Dialogue: Building a World Where Civil Society is at the Center of Decisions When It Comes to the Uses of New and Emerging Technologies

The first edition of the Global Dialogue, a two-day event of panels around the topics of AI and Human Intelligence took place in Geneva, hosted by Ambassador Miguel Angel Moratinos, Under Secretary General and High Representative for the UN Alliance of Civilisations, in collaboration with Ambassador Juan Antonio March, President of Fundación Onuart.

Speakers from the public and private sector presented their views on the ethical, commercial and moral aspects of deploying these technologies without guardrails, what is already happening when it comes to digital identity and privacy.

Co-organised by the UN Alliance of Civilisations and Fundación Onuart, the event aims to create a platform for debating ideas on the ethical implications of emerging technologies and their impact on society. To examine the relationship between Human Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence and their pervasiveness in public affairs, and in all interactions that citizens have with their governments, and as consumers.

While the data of European citizens is protected (at least in theory) by regulatory instruments such as GDPR, the digital identity of each one is still up for grabs, as we do not have a framework to protect and assure ownership by the citizen.

Speaking at the event were the CEO of WISeKey, Carlos Moreira; the Spanish Secretary-of-State for Foreign and Global Affairs, Mrs. Angeles Moreno Bau; Dr. Richard Benjamins, Chief AI and Data Strategist at Telefonica; and Dr. Rafael Yuste, Professor of Biological Sciences and Neuroscience, and Co-Director of the Kavli Institute of Brain Science and Director of the NeuroTechnology Center (NTC) at Columbia University.
