Human Rights Council: The UN Human Rights Council President, Ambassador Nazhat Shameem is in New York for meetings with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and the General Assembly President. Among other items in her agenda: to present the HRC annual report, and a series of high-level meetings with heads of agency and the chair of the ACABQ, the UN Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ).
Sources tell me that the HRC will discuss how to ensure that the work of the body is properly funded. Demand for the work of the Human Rights Council has grown in the last few years, as citizens are increasingly aware of the obligations that State-members have towards the protection of fundamental rights, and as a result of the UN HRC outreach work, human rights activists on social media platforms, and the work of the press.
