Water Scarcity and Transboundary Cooperation

At the tenth Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention (MOP10), held from October 23-25 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, over 500 participants from 100 countries came together to evaluate progress on the SDG 6 reporting exercise.

153 nations share cross-border water resources that account for 60% of global freshwater, so there is an urgent need for cross-border cooperation to combat water scarcity given the impacts of climate change.

Water scarcity isn't just a local problem, it's a global one, and climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction preparedness are at the core of addressing the issue.

Only 55

Adopted in 1992, the UN Water Convention, formally known as the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, has played a role on negotiations for global cooperation on water management.
