Chateau du Clos de Vougeot
The historical building plays a role in French diplomacy. Chateau du Clos de Vougeot hosted the farewell dinner that President Emmanuel Macron offered to Angela Merkel, in 2021, and hosts the annual gala dinner the night before the world famous wine charity auction of the Hospices de Beaune, run by Sotheby’s every November.
*I interviewed the winemaker of the Hospices de Beaune, Ludivine Griveau, back in November to speak about their commitment to sustainability, and the transition to organic wine production by 2024, for the 60 hectares of the winery, watch below.
I also interviewed Arnaud Orsel, CEO of Chateau du Clos de Vougeot to speak about visiting the region and discovering the architecture and restaurants nearby.
*Please note that Clos de Vougeot is exceptionally closed 24 and 25 December and 31 and 1rst January for the holidays.
Wine Tourism in Bourgogne in January
Mark your calendars, on the 27 and 28 of January Bourgogne commemorates the patron saint of winemakers: Saint Vincent. The gathering brings together wine producers and the entire viticulture ecosystem for a blessing of the crops. It is, I am told, one of the highlights of an otherwise dreary winter, and the pageantry warms up hearts and vineyards. You can visit Beaune too and discover how beautiful the vineyards are under the mist and enjoy quiet dinners and wine tastings off-season.
Lyon: A French Culinary Paradise
Have you ever wondered how far from Lyon we are? Only 2:15 hours by train.
If there is a perfect weekend getaway from Geneva, this is it. There are literally hundreds of restaurants and wine shops, and Côtes du Rhône wines aplenty to taste.
For more modest tastes check the Halle Paul Bocuse, with its oysters and charcuterie tasting spots for a quick lunch (closed on Sundays), or to quell your sweet tooth.
Wine Tastings and Fairs
Lyon hosts many wine fairs. Of note the natural and organic wines trade fairs, that are also open to the public, such as Sous Les Paves de la Vigne that took place last November at the historical Palais de la Bourse, under its phenomenal ceilings.
Music Makes the People Come Together
Said Madonna already. Here is a modern take on The Nutcracker “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” with The Roots and pianist Chloe Flower, at the Jimmy Fallon show in New York this past week. Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Happy Kwanza!
