The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Government of India signed an agreement to establish the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine.
With an initial investment of USD 250 million from the Government of India, this global hub will focus on research of traditional medicine using emerging technologies and science to harness the potential of indigenous practices to improve primary care, treat diseases, and optimise health and well-being of millions around the world.
It is estimated that 80% of the world’s population uses some form of traditional medicine to prevent and heal diseases.
170 of the 194 WHO Member States have reported the use of traditional medicine, and their governments “have asked for WHO’s support in creating a body of reliable evidence and data on traditional medicine practices and products”.
