19 August is UN World Humanitarian Day
The UN marks the 20 years since the bombing of the UN offices in Baghdad where the Brazilian diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello perished, with his team, long standing colleagues that had agreed to move to a volatile situation.
I was at the UN headquarters in New York, in the newsroom of UN Radio, when the Canal Street bombing occurred. We waited, hoping for good news, but after two or three hours, or what seemed an eternity, the spokesperson of the Secretary General came to tell us that Sergio was gone and so were others, and many more were injured.
I am posting again the piece I wrote in 2020.
Remembering Sergio Vieira de Mello
Today the UN celebrates the World Humanitarian Day, to highlight the work of those in the field, in the frontlines of international aid. The day was created in observance of the 2003 bombing of the UN offices in Iraq.
