The WTO Agriculture Committee Met in Geneva to Discuss the Regulation that Many Countries Say Will Harm Smallholder Farmers. Brazil, US, and Indonesia voicing concerns.

EU Fights Against Deforestation

The European Union (EU) confirmed at a meeting today of Agriculture Committee at the WTO, in Geneva, that it will proceed with the enforcement of its EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). That is slated to enter into force on December 30, 2024, despite strong opposition from key agriculture-exporting countries. These countries, including Brazil, India, Indonesia, and the United States, have voiced concerns about the regulation's impact on international trade and agricultural exports.

The EU emphasized that any delay in the implementation of the EUDR would require legislative changes, which the bloc is not considering. It underscored the need for legal certainty for businesses and operators, stating that the main focus is ensuring that all the necessary components for effective implementation are in place. This includes providing detailed guidance to economic operators and member states and developing the required IT infrastructure for the regulation's smooth operation.
